Early Music Studio combines the strengths of our diverse faculty specializations with the uniqueness of our individualized student programs. EMS offers an instrumental orchestral ensemble and small chamber ensembles, led by specialists in historical performance (Richard Semmens, Sandra Mangsen and Joseph Lanza). Instrumentalists perform on copies of baroque and classical string, wind and keyboard instruments supplied by the Don Wright Faculty of Music. Students without experience on period instruments may audition on their modern instruments.

Singers interested in early music should audition for Thames Scholars, conducted by Gerald Neufeld. Occasionally singers already experienced in historical performance participate as soloists.

EMS performs four to six concerts each academic year both on and off campus. Most concerts involve both orchestral and chamber music and some are developed in collaboration with Thames Scholars.
