HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Students are back after a well-earned break and ready to leap into a new year, a new academic term, and new opportunities.

Two student performance competitions take place this month, with the final rounds of the annual Maritsa Brookes Concerto Competition and Fred Pattison Piano Award Competition open to the public. You can hear last year's winners of the Brookes Concerto competition during Symphony Orchestra concerts, and enjoy a solo recital from Terrence Wu, 2023 Pattison Piano competition winner, on January 18 - the eve of this year's event.

The Fridays at 12:30 concert series hosts three concerts this month, with two all-faculty events: Ein Liederkonzert features songs by Strauss and Schumann and duets by Mendelssohn performed by singers Bethany Hörst and Sophie Louise Roland with collaborative pianist Marianna Chibotar-Rutkevich, and pianists Stéphan Sylvestre and Angela Park perform Brahms’ Symphony No. 3 in F major, Op. 90 from the original arrangement for piano duet. East meets West at the end of the month with Grace Lou performing on erhu alongside a string quartet performing music of love and nature.

Celebrate all things brass with Brass Day 2024 taking place this month featuring James Miller, Associate Principal Trombone with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

With the New Orford String Quartet back as official Artists in Residence at Western this month, students have the opportunity to perform and learn alongside Canada's renowned chamber group. During their public concert Pizzicato! on January 24, the captivating program showcases the diverse ways in which pizzicato, a technique where the strings are plucked instead of bowed, is used to shape the expressive landscapes of string quartet music. The Quartet will perform works by Caroline Shaw, Ana Sokolovic and Beethoven and will be joined by students to perform Mozart's delightful Divertimento in D major.

The month closes with Arnold Schoenberg’s 1912 bombshell masterpiece Pierrot Lunaire in a setting of poetry by Albert Giraud. At its 1912 premiere in Berlin, audience members hissed, booed and hurled insults. What will you do? Faculty performers: Patricia Green, mezzo-soprano, Stephen Tam, flute and piccolo, Jana Starling, clarinets, Scott St. John, violin and viola, Thomas Wiebe, cello, and Stéphan Sylvestre, piano. A roundtable discussion at 7pm precedes, exploring "Pierrot" from several different angles of expertise; moderator Emily Abrams Ansari joins roundtable panelists including Omar Daniel and Kevin Mooney
