Annette-Barbara Vogel

Annette-Barbara Vogel

There are few in the music world today who do not hail in superlatives when Annette-Barbara Vogel’s name is mentioned. In July 2010, Gramophone Magazine lauded “Vogel’s perfect intonation” and Classical CD Review wrote: “Annette-Barbara Vogel is about the most ideal exponent a composer could hope for.” Considered one of the finest German violinists of her generation, she is renowned for “… authoritative and highly sensitive performances” (Music Web International),” and a “formidable technique, stunning musicality, and stage presence that transmits to orchestra and audience alike.” (Brahms Concerto, Wuppertaler Zeitung).

As she is much sought after for her artistry, Vogel’s yearly performance, master course teaching, and recording schedules take her to major concert halls in Europe, North and South America, Asia, and the Middle East. The upcoming 2011 summer takes Vogel on two four-week tours; first, an 14-concert tour in Brazil comprising two separate recital programs (Beethoven, Brahms, Lekeu, Wieniawski, Mozart, Faure, Strauss) a chamber music program (Lutoslawski, Taaffee Zwillich, Schnittke), concerto appearances (Bruch), and masterclasses; and second, a twelve-concert tour throughout South Africa which will include works by Canadian and South African composers.

Vogel's exceptional talent is recognized by numerous prestigious solo prizes and scholarships: first prize in the Folkwang Competition (Essen), the Bund der Industrie Competition (Frankfurt), and the Deutscher Musikwettbewerb in Bonn. She also won a gold medal in the International Competition Caltanissetta in Italy, was a finalist in the International Carl Maria von Weber Competition in Munich, and a recipient of the Starling Scholarship at the University of Cincinnati.  Vogel was one of the musicians chosen to perform in a Gala concert honoring Dorothy Delay's seventy-fifth birthday, where she played Brahms Concerto with Keith Lockhart. She has shared concert stages with notable artists Christian Altenburger, Lars Vogt, Jesse Levine, Dmitri Sitkovetsky, Sandra Rivers, Maria Kliegel, Vladimir Mendelssohn, Elsbeth Moser, Peter Zazofsky and Juhani Lagerspetz. Vogel has performed in programs at the esteemed international festivals Aspen, Gstaad, Graz, Seoul, Schleswig-Holstein, Kuhmo, Ravinia, and Nova Scotia, and musically collaborated with Pierre Amoyal, Ralf Gothoni, Bernhard Greenhouse, Arthur Grumiaux, Lord Yehudi Menuhin, Viktor Pikaisen and the Tokyo String Quartet.

Vogel began violin studies at age four. At twelve she had her concerto debut on the stage of "Tonhalle Düsseldorf," a year after being accepted as the youngest student ever to attend the Folkwang-Hochschule Essen. Vogel later earned an Artist Diploma at the College-Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati. Vogel’s musical studies were supported by numerous cultural foundations like the “DAAD”, the "Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes,“ the ”Ponto-Foundation,” and the “Kunststiftung Nordrhein-Westfalen,” which, at the beginning of her career provided her with a violin by Lorenzo Storioni. Among her most influential teachers one finds Walter Levin, Herman Krebbers, Henry Meyer, Won-Bin Yim, Pieter Daniel, and the "legendary” Dorothy Delay.

Before coming to Canada in January 2004 to join the faculty at the University of Western Ontario, Vogel held several violin teaching positions: she was “Artist-in-Residence” at the University of Virginia at Charlottesville, professor at Folkwang-Hochschule Essen, and subsequently professor at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, where she was founder and artistic director of ”MAGISTERRA! International Chamber Music Festival and Academy.”

Annette-Barbara Vogel is highly visible in the musical foreground today, ever devoting time to and delighting audiences with new and sometimes unlikely projects, such as performing all Beethoven violin/piano sonatas in a single day. She is also a leader when it comes to performing unusual violin repertoire and an avid supporter of literature by women composers. Her many premieres of works by composers like Emily Doolittle, Chia Patino, David Myska, Piotr Radko, or Amelia Kaplan show her ongoing engagement with contemporary music.

Two recently released CDs of Vogel’s over twelve recordings, the much anticipated complete violin repertoire of Hans Gál, met with critical acclaim, citing her “committed performances… [and] winning presence [of] her tone and delivery.” (The Strad).  Anticipated to also please audiences and critics is her February 2011 recording release “Französische Komponistinnen,” which includes works by French women composers Farrenc, Boulanger, and Viardot. Vogel's passion to unveil lost master-works is showcased in her upcoming violin/viola duos CD, "Through the Centuries." It includes works by Bach, Pleyel, Fuchs, Laszlo Weiner, and Gal, and is scheduled for release in the fall of 2011. Vogel records for Avie Records, Bluegriffin Recordings, Cybele Records, Eroica Classical Records, and Harmonia Mundi Germany.
