Bryn Hughes

Bryn Hughes is a doctoral student in the music theory program at Florida State University. Bryn also studied at the University of Western Ontario, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Music Theory and Composition, and a Master’s degree in Music. Bryn’s research interests include music cognition, popular music analysis, atonal voice-leading, and the music of Alfred Schnittke. His dissertation involves an empirical investigation of harmony in non-common-practice musical contexts.
He has presented papers on atonal music analysis and popular music analysis at the UWO Graduate Student Symposium, the FSU Music Theory Forum, the South Central Society for Music Theory, and Music Theory Southeast, where he won the award for best student paper. He presented research from his dissertation at the most recent national meeting of Society for Music Perception and Cognition in Indianapolis, and will be presenting a paper on Alfred Schnittke’s Concerto for Choir at the upcoming meeting of the Society for Music Theory in Montreal (November 2009).
