Christine Guptill
Dr. Christine Guptill holds concurrent bachelors degrees in oboe performance and biology from the University of Western Ontario (UWO). She completed an MS in Occupational Therapy (OT) at Western Michigan University in 2000, and PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences at UWO in 2010. Her clinical experience includes hand therapy, occupational health and safety, and auto insurance. Her doctoral work was supported by a fellowship from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council. She currently holds a post-doctoral fellowship funded by the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR) at McMaster University in the School of Rehabilitation Sciences.
Dr. Guptill’s program of research focuses on the health and participation of musicians. She has published twelve papers on this subject, ranging from surveys, to qualitative interviews with professional musicians, to a prevention article for music educators. She has presented her work at conferences worldwide. Dr. Guptill is a faculty member with the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, and presents workshops for the London Youth Symphony. She is also guest editor for an upcoming special issue of the journal WORK on health in the performing arts. Dr. Guptill was invited to present at the 2010 Ontario Music Educators Association meeting, and co-directed a clinical workshop at the first Canadian meeting of the Performing Arts Medicine Association (PAMA) in 2011. In the same year, PAMA also recognized her work with the Alice G. Brandfonbrener Young Investigators Award.
In 2003 Dr. Guptill taught full-time at the UWO School of OT, and continued to teach in that program part-time until 2008. She has also taught part-time in the School of Health Studies since 2006, where her course, Health and Music Performance (3949B), was first offered in 2009. This interdisciplinary course is now housed in the department of Music Performance Studies and is cross-listed with Health Studies (3091B). Dr. Guptill is a member of the American Federation of Musicians, and performs regularly as an oboist with the Concert Players Orchestra in London, Ontario.
