David Beach

Professor Beach has taught at Yale University, Brooklyn College of the City University of New York, The Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester, where for several years he was Chair of the Department of Music Theory and for four years was University Dean of Graduate Studies (University of Rochester). His last appointment was at the University of Toronto, where he was Dean of the Faculty of Music from 1996 to 2004. He is currently retired, teaching part time and actively engaged in research.
His primary research area is Schenkerian Theory and Analysis. He has published several books, the latest Aspects of Unity in Bach’s Partitas and Suites (2005), and over thirty articles in leading research journals. He and a colleague have just completed a book tentatively titled Music of the 18th and 19th Centuries: An Analytic Approach, and this fall he will begin revising a long-term project, a text on Schenkerian Analysis.
