Ian Franklin

 

Ian Franklin has been principal oboist of Orchestra London Canada since 1986 and a lecturer at the Don Wright Faculty of Music for 18 years. He is a founding member of the Aeolian Winds, one of Canada’s best known wind ensembles. Ian is a native of Victoria, B.C., where his early training in voice and piano began at the age of five. His teachers included Robin Wood of Victoria (piano), Bernard Shapiro, principal oboist of the Seattle Symphony, and Ray Still, principal oboist of the Chicago Symphony. He was a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada and a finalist in the CBC Talent Festival competition. Ian was appointed principal oboist of the Victoria Symphony, at the age of 17. He taught at the Victoria Conservatory of Music and the University of Victoria, and freelanced with the Vancouver Symphony, and toured with the National Ballet of Canada and Royal Winnipeg Ballet orchestras.

For 14 years Ian was principal oboist with the Regina Symphony Orchestra. He also freelanced with the Saskatoon Symphony, the Calgary Philharmonic, and the Minot (ND) Symphony, and was on faculties of the Regina Conservatory of Music, the University of Regina and the Saskatchewan School of the Arts. In 1982 he was interim oboist with the York Winds (Toronto), and in 1988 he was principal oboist of the Colorado Music Festival. Since joining Orchestra London, Ian has performed with many orchestras in Ontario, and has also been on the faculty of the National Music Camp of Canada, the Nova Scotia Youth Symphony and the National Academy Orchestra.

Ian has performed as a soloist with the Victoria and Regina Symphony Orchestras, Orchestra London, the CBC Orchestra (Vancouver), the Symphony Orchestra of San Luis Potosi (Mexico), and many smaller orchestras. He has performed throughout Canada, and in the U.S., Germany and Taiwan. Ian has been a frequent CBC recitalist, both as soloist and chamber musician, and has a list of recordings which includes several discs featuring the Aeolian Winds, and a solo CD with Erik Schultz, trumpet, and the Southwest German Chamber Orchestra.
