John Cuciurean

John Cuciurean, Assistant Professor of Music Theory, received a PhD (music theory) from the State University of New York at Buffalo, a BMus (music theory and composition) as well as a BEng (computer engineering) from McMaster University, and an ARCT (guitar performance) from the Royal Conservatory of Music.

Prior to his appointment at Western, Dr. Cuciurean was on faculty in the School of Music at Arizona State University from 2003 to 2006, served as co-ordinator of the music theory department at Florida International University from 1998 to 2003, and served as a faculty associate at both the State University of New York at Buffalo and McMaster University from 1996 to 1998.

His research has been published in Journal of Music Theory, Canadian University Music Review, Music Theory Online, Women and Music in America since 1900: An Encyclopedia, Proceedings of the Second Biennial International Conference on 20th-Century Music (forthcoming), and Contemporary Music Forum (forthcoming).
Dr. Cuciurean has presented papers on a variety of research topics at regional, national, and international conferences and his compositions have received performances in Canada and the United States.

Current research interests include western art music since 1945 (particularly the music of György Ligeti and the avant garde movement), music of the Second Viennese School, mathematical modeling of musical structures, aspects of intertextuality in music analysis, and the theory of scales, tuning and temperament.

Dr. Cuciurean is a member of the Society for Music Theory, the College Music Society, and the Canadian University Music Society.
