John Phillips


John Phillips is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario where he received his undergraduate degrees in both Music and Education. He pursued a Masters Degree in Music Education at Boston University and is currently a PhD candidate at York University in Ethnomusicology. He attained an Artist Diploma in trumpet performance from the Western Conservatory of Music.

Mr. Phillips has been an instructor for both the University of Toronto and York University in the faculties of music and education. Prior to leaving teaching in the public system, he acquired extensive music teaching experience in elementary and secondary schools in the London, Scarborough and York Region District School Boards.

For the past three years he was responsible for the curriculum review and implementation of the Arts at the Ministry of Education for the Province of Ontario. He has also served as Principal and Instructor of the in-service music teacher training programs at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education.

Mr Phillips has contributed articles to the Ontario Music Educators' Association journal, The Recorder, the Canadian Music Educators' Association Journal, the Ontario Band Association newsletter, In Harmony, and the Ontario College of Teachers journal, Professionally Speaking. He recently provided a composition analysis for volume eight of the highly acclaimed series Teaching Music Through Performance in Band, published by GIA.

Mr. Phillips' musical leadership has been extensive throughout Ontario. He was on staff at the Ontario Educational Leadership Centre for 13 years in the capacity of Music Course Manager and Facilitator. He served on music curriculum advisory and development teams for the Ministry of Education and several school boards. He has been a board member for both the Ontario Music Educator’s Association and the Ontario Band Association. He frequently presents workshops at the annual OMEA conference and has recently taken on the role of co-editor for their journal. He is a founding member of Phi Beta Mu, Lambda Iota Chapter and is an Honorary member of the Tri-M Music Honour Society.

Mr. Phillips has guest conducted honour bands across Canada and the United States. He has adjudicated, and provided clinics at music festivals in North America, South America, Europe, and Asia. Each summer, he conducts the Wind Ensemble at the National Music Camp of Canada.

As a performer, he has played in the London Symphony Orchestra, Brantford Symphony and the Forest City Brass Quintet. He spent two summers at the Banff School of Fine Arts under the leadership of the Canadian Brass, studying trumpet with Ronald Romm and Fred Mills.

Mr. Phillips is in demand as an expert on marching music education. He is a member of the Music Educators' National Conference (MENC) Blue Ribbon Panel on marching music standards. In 2010 he chaired the inaugural Marching Music Academy as part of the MENC Music Education Week in Washington. He also received the 2010 MENC award for Excellence in Marching Music Education. He is an adjudicator and clinician for Bands of America, the World Association of Marching Show Bands (WAMSBE) and Judge Administrator for Drum Corps International.
