Mel Martin

At the age of thirteen, Mel Martin was accepted to study violin with Francis Chaplin, who was on faculty at Brandon University in Brandon, Manitoba. Two years later he was one of the younger musicians chosen to be a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada.
Mel Martin continued his violin studies at Indiana University with James Buswell and Franco Gulli while completing his Bachelor of Music degree. He received a Master of Music degree at the University of Michigan, studying with Paul Makanowitzky and Charles Avsharian.
Mel has studied chamber music with the Orford String Quartet, Menahem Pressler of the Beaux Arts Trio, and Samuel Mayes, former Principal Cellist of the Philadelphia Orchestra. He has worked orchestra repertoire with Jacques Israelivitch, former Concertmaster of the Toronto Symphony.
Since 1981 Mel has held the position of Section First Violinist with Orchestra London Canada where he has also assumed the responsibilities of Concertmaster and Assistant Concertmaster on many occasions. Mel has performed three concertos with Orchestra London: Mozart’s Concerto no. 4 in D major, Kabalevsky’s Concerto in C major and Bach’s Concerto for Two Violins in D minor.
Since 1988, Mel has been a member of the Stratford Festival Orchestra. He held the position of Concertmaster from 2000-2008.
Mel has performed solo and chamber music recitals in Canada, the United States and Mexico. He has been a guest of the Stratford Summer Music Festival. Notable performances include the Mendelssohn Octet with the Axelrod String Quartet.
Mel has been on faculty at The University of Western Ontario since 2005. He brings a wealth of teaching experience, being a prominent violin teacher in the London area for over two decades.
