Graduated with a HonBMus’75 (Per) from the University of Western Ontario (Western University) where he studied with Dr. Larry Cortner and was a prize winner in the RCCO International Organist’s Competition in 1973.

In 1975 he became Director of Music at Central United Church in Moncton NB.  During his 9 years there he was an active Organ Recitalist and Choral Clinician throughout the Atlantic Provinces, and recorded by CBC. 

He was also on staff at Mount Allison University in Sackville NB where he taught Advanced Choral conducting and directed the University Choir until he left to accept the position of Director of Music at First-St. Andrew’s United Church in London, ON in January 1984.  Now retired, at First-St. Andrew’s he was responsible for a large varied music program while being Organist and Choir Director.  He was artistic Director for the ‘MUSIC AT FIRST-ST ANDREW’S CONCERT SERIES’ which has featured performances by his Choir with composers JOHN RUTTER, STEPHEN CLEOBURY, ROBERT COOPER and more recently WILL TODD.

On this series he has brought Organists Simon Preston, John Scott, Gillian Weir, David Briggs and many others. 

Since moving back to Ontario he was featured Organist on “Organists in Recital” CBC and in 2005 recitalist for the National R.C.C.O. Convention in London.

Paul Merritt has been on Staff at Western University since 2005 as Organ Instructor.
