COAA is an elite international program that provides singers, pianists and directors with the skills to obtain, realize, and sustain a prolific and rewarding career in the operatic profession. An internationally recognized faculty from celebrated institutions provides the participants with invaluable insight into the multifaceted world of opera – its preparation, performance, and business through a variety of forums.

Singer Program

Participate in scenes in both supporting and leading roles across the repertoire in a variety of styles, genre and languages.

  • Coaching and direction to understand character through music, text, physicality and drama

Singer Program Costs:

  • Application/Audition Fee: $50 for auditioning to COAA
  • Tuition for COAA: $1300 + 13% HST= $1469 HST Number R108162587RT0001

  • $50 CDN Application Fee – cheque or money order only, payable to Western University

Audition Requirements:

  • Three arias which best demonstrate your abilities
    • Please provide a printed copy of your repertoire at your audition
  • Note: You will need to provide your own pianist

Pianist Program

Further your vocal accompanying experience to prepare for professional opportunities in the world of opera.

Gain experience:

  • As repetiteurs
  • Playing for masterclasses
  • Musical rehearsals
  • Staging rehearsals
  • Private coaching with singers
  • Operatic keyboard technique

Work with:

  • Distinguished faculty pianists in private lessons

Pianist Program Costs:

  • Application/Audition fee: $50 for auditioning to COAA
  • Tuition for COAA: $700 + 13% HST= $791  HST Number R108162587RT0001

Application Requirements:

  • $50 CDN Application Fee – cheque or money order only, payable to Western University

Audition Requirements:

  • Two brief excerpts to be sung and played
  • One aria to be performed with a singer
  • One short solo work no longer than five minutes
  • Note: Please provide a printed copy of your repertoire at your audition

Assistant Director and Assistant Conductor Fellowships

  • Work closely with resident Artistic and Musical Directors
  • Direct selected scenes
  • Assist with all scenes
  • Take a primary director role for a faculty staged opera

Assistant Fellows:

  • Have access to all COAA activities
  • Receive one-on-one mentorship to develop and realize their dramaturgical concepts
  • Are guided by an internatinal team of directors and conductors

  • Internationally recognized faculty from such celebrated institutions as Boston Conservatory, San Fransisco Opera, Central City Opera, Opera Studio Nederland, Teatro alla Scala, Royal Opera House, Glyndebourne, Dutch National Opera Academy, Glimmerglass Opera, Opera de Montreal, New York City Opera, and Minnesota Opera.
  • Masterclasses with highly acclaimed vocal teacher and coaches
  • Voice lessons, coachings, classes in role preparation, performance practice, drama, movement, dance, career development.
  • Final performance with piano reduction.
