General Information

The Arts Division of the Faculty of Graduate Studies includes a Department of Music, whose Chair is ex officio the Dean of Music. Day-to-day authority for graduate matters is designated to Dr. Richard S. Parks, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Music (Graduate Studies and Research).

The Graduate Committee includes the Dean, the Associate Dean (Graduate Studies and Research), the Chair and one member of faculty from each of the four departments in the Don Wright Faculty of Music; and one graduate student selected by the Society of Graduate Students in Music (non-voting). This committee sets policy, approves thesis and recital proposals, hears petitions and appeals, and generally oversees the academic administration of the programs.

The graduate program assistant, Shelly Koster, can answer most questions about regulations and procedures, or direct you to others who may be able to help. Procedures for appeals and petitions are described in appeals.

A fundamental premise is that you are here to finish a graduate degree program, with distinction, in a reasonable amount of time. Measures of success include good marks in course work, no accumulation of "Incomplete" grades, an approved thesis topic or recital program and evidence of consistent work on that project. We trust that any extracurricular obligations (including professional activity and teaching assistant responsibilities) or leaves of absence will not diminish or delay your work toward the degree.

A graduate student telephone and e-mail list will be available in TC 210 to all students. Please advise the graduate program assistant if you do not wish your telephone number or e-mail address to be published.

People

The Chairs of the Don Wright Faculty of Music's three undergraduate departments act as program advisors for MA and MMus students in their areas. They formulate the basic admission decision, monitor the satisfaction of special prerequisites and the need for review work, and plan course work, in consultation with the student. Any changes after the main planning meeting upon first registration should be discussed with and agreed to in writing by your program advisor. See MA and MMus Programs for more detail.

Music faculty with PhD supervisory status in the Faculty of Graduate Studies are members of the PhD Committee (Music), which evaluates applications for admission and generally oversees other aspects of the doctoral program. Each student is assigned an Advisory Committee, which directly supervises his or her program. See Doctoral Program for more detail.

The Associate Dean co-ordinates the work and implements the decisions of the program advisors, individual doctoral advisory committees, PhD Committee and Graduate Committee, counsels students and applicants, and is responsible to the Deans of Music and Graduate Studies for the administration of the programs. The progress of each student is monitored in the Graduate Office at each term's registration period, and on a regular basis by the student's own advisor or advisory committee. The Graduate Office will inform students promptly of any problems that are identified.

The graduate program assistant maintains a list of current addresses. Since you may be disadvantaged in registration and financial aid matters if you cannot quickly be reached year-round, it is essential that you keep your address up-to-date on this list, in addition to any changes you may make in filing other university forms.
