Established in January 1999, the UWO New Horizons Adult Band Program aims to provide instruction to adults wishing to learn (or re-learn) to play wind or percussion instruments. This increasingly popular program offers instruction on the following instruments: flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon, trumpet, french horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba and percussion.

The UWO New Horizons Adult Band Program is modeled after similar programs in the United States and is sponsored by Western's Don Wright Faculty of Music. Currently, there are more than fifty such bands operating in the United States and Canada.

The University of Western Ontario was the first New Horizons Band in Canada, and remains one of the largest programs of its kind in North America.

Why should I join?

Research shows that playing a musical instrument can be good for one's health. It develops fine motor control skills and, in the case of wind and brass instruments, improves breath control. Becoming a member of the adult band can give mature adults in particular a renewed sense of purpose. It's a wonderful way to make new friends and expand your musical interests. Our students are here to learn new skills, and most importantly, have FUN!

What goes on?

This program takes place Saturday mornings between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the Music Building (at the corner of Lambton and Perth). Courses run during the academic year (September through early April) with a summer session offered in May and June. The program consists of both small and large class instruction with four levels of instruction designed to provide the most appropriate level of instruction.

The first is a class for beginners. No previous experience or note-reading ability are required for this class. Participants have the option of renting or purchasing instruments.

The second level of instruction is an intermediate class for those who have had some prior musical experience or who have already taken our beginning class. This consists of one hour of band and one hour of sectional (focusing on your instrument with others at your playing level). Feel free to contact us about rental and purchase options.

The third class is an advanced band for those who have participated in the program for more than two terms, or who have a previous musical background on their instrument of study. There are two advanced band classes from which to choose. One allows for 90 minutes of band with an hour sectional. The other consists of two and a half hours of band with no sectionals. Each advanced band has opportunities to perform throughout the term.

In past summers, the combined advanced bands have toured Europe together having 10 fun music-filled days in Budapest, Prague and Vienna.
