Fred Pattison Piano Competition
Proceeds from the Fred Pattison Award Fund, held by Foundation Western, will support the $4,500 Fred Pattison Piano Award at the Don Wright Faculty of Music, which is to be awarded to the winner of an annual piano competition. In addition to receiving a cash award, the winner will give a public performance the following September, during Orientation Week.
Dr. Pattison is Western’s former Head of Chemistry (1959-1965) and Director of Student Health Services (1973-1988). He has a great passion for the piano and has spent many hours enjoying performances in von Kuster Hall at the Faculty of Music. This award reflects his love of music and his desire to reward excellence in piano performance.
2008-2009 was the inaugural year for this competition.

Congratulations to the 2010 competition finalists: Vlad Soloviev, Ingrid Gan, and Kevin Yoon. All will participate in the final round of competition on Friday, January 22 at 8 p.m. in von Kuster Hall. Adjudicating this year is Jean-Paul Sévilla who will also be presenting a masterclass Saturday, January 23, 2010 at 10 a.m. in von Kuster Hall.
Competition Details
The Fred Pattison Award will be awarded to a 1st , 2nd , 3rd or 4th year full-time student enrolled in a Music Degree program, whose principal instrument is piano. Fourth year students can only participate if they are returning for a Masters in Music the following year.
The competition consists of two rounds:
Round One: Recorded Audition
Students should prepare a CD (unedited) with 10 minutes of their proposed selection(s) for the Round Two. Music should be chosen carefully to demonstrate technique, range and musicality. Applicants may use a live recording of their performance previously made (such as a recital) as long as the performance was given within the last 12 months (no earlier than December 18, 2008).
Applicants are reminded that the purpose of the recording is to ascertain whether or not they are suitable for progression to the next round. Therefore it is in the applicant’s best interest that they turn in the best quality recording they can, however, this need not be done in a professional studio. The quality of most home-based studios will be fine for the purposes of this recording. Please ensure that no indication is given within the recording as to who is being recorded. The applicant should NOT write their name on the disc (numbers will be assigned to the CD & accompanying documentation when they are received).
Contestants who submit an unreadable CD for the preliminary round will be automatically disqualified (notification will be given after the results are announced so that the same mistake is not made in other competitions).
Recordings must be submitted with the appropriate documentation (see below) no later than 4pm, Friday, December 18, 2009 to Melaney Mathews in TC 232. Recordings will be judged blindly by two piano faculty who will choose three to five contestants to compete in the Final Round.
Round Two: Public Performance
The Final Round, judged by an external adjudicator, requires each of the finalists to perform 20 to 30 minutes of solo repertoire. Contestant’s must perform their program as outlined in their application. This must include the piece(s) used in Round One.
Judging the Competition on Friday, January 22, 2010 at 8pm in von Kuster Hall will be French artist Jean-Paul Sévilla. Mr. Sévilla will also give a masterclass Saturday, January 23, 2010 at 10am all in von Kuster Hall. Depending upon the number of finalists and time constraints, the Pattison Piano Award master class might be open to piano performance students who did not enter the competition.
